In July 2002 John Bowis put forward a Resolution before the Parliament concerning the critical situation in Somalia. It was successfully adopted by the entire Parliament. It highlighted the new waves of refugees and displaced persons, the urgent need for attention and assistance from the international community, in particular of the EU, in order to consolidate the peace process and assist the transitional institutions. John Bowis said, “It is the European Union’s duty to help all the Somali nations. It is also our duty to understand their history.”
