Madagascar

In May 2002 John Bowis moved a resolution on raising awareness of the tensions in Madagascar - rising with the capital Antananarivo blockaded after the destruction of six bridges, four of the six Provincial Governors backing the outgoing president Didier Ratsikara. It recognised that over 60 people have been killed in political violence, that there are reports of many further deaths due to the shortage of medicines, and Madagascar’s economy is crippled with over thirty textile factories closed.
