Preceding the World Food Summit, European Parliament Resolution, May 2002

In May 2002 John Bowis put forward a Resolution before the meeting of the World Food Summit in Rome in June. It deplored the cases in which the governments of food-insecure countries have let military expenditure prevail over the acute nutritional needs of their populations. Speaking in the Chamber, John said: "I hope the outcome from Rome will be more than a statement: I hope it will be a programme of determined action." Closing his speech, John reminded the Commission of its duty:"I ask you to remember that every year some nine million people die from hunger. That is 24,000 deaths a day; it is one life lost every 3.6 seconds; it is 50 dead in the three minutes I have been speaking."

Following the World Food Summit - European Parliament Resolution on Combating Hunger, July 2002

At the Plenary session in Strasbourg on 3 July 2002, John Bowis put forward a Resolution on the World Food Summit held in Rome in June, outlining its successes and failures. Speaking in the Chamber, John said: "The summit took 2½ years to put together. It cost millions. It was so well organised that the final document was agreed before the summit began. And what a declaration! It recalls, recognises, reaffirms, reiterates and then goes on to do it all again. The new policy to help the hungry of the world is not 'Everything but Arms', but anything but lift your arms to do anything."
