Human Rights

Aceh (Indonesia), November 2003

In early November the Indonesia Government extended martial law in the Aceh province for a further six months after commencing a major military campaign against the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in May.

John Bowis proposed that the European Parliament debate and pass a resolution on the deteriorating situation in the region. The European Parliament called for the Indonesian Government to provide access to UN agencies and humanitarian organisation to the currently closed-off region.
