European Brain Research

In July 2003 John Bowis hosted the launch of the European Brian Council which brings together health professionals, patients groups and the research community in the field of neurological health.

In September 2003 he addressed a conference on Brain Research in Europe.

With more research, new technologies, such as nanotechnology, could help tackle brain diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons, depression and schizophrenia.

John Bowis also called for research into stigma that affects those with mental illnesses: “For far too many people, living with a brain disorder means being labelled, patronised, despised, feared and, to a greater or lesser extent, segregated – in society, within ones family, at work, at play and even within our health and social services.

“In a perverse reversal, you can hide but you cannot run; you cannot perform; you cannot contribute to society as you would wish; you cannot lead a full life as you would want.
One subject crying out for research is stigma.”
