Environment

John Bowis is a leading member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and UK Conservative spokesman for Environment, Health and Food Safety in the European Parliament.

The Environment Committee is one of the most important committees in the Parliament because the subjects it covers are areas where the Parliament has powers of co-decision with the Council of Ministers, meaning it has a powerful legislative role.

John Bowis is the Coordinator (spokesman) for the EPP-ED, the largest political group on the Environment Committee. He is responsible for coordinating the activities of the Group on all aspects of the Committee’s work.

Environment
The priorities of the EU’s Environment Action Programme for 2001-10 are:
· tackling climate change and global warming;
· protecting the natural habitat and wildlife;
· addressing environment and health issues;
· preserving natural resources and managing waste.
Since many environmental challenges such as pollution and climate change respect no boundaries, the EU has a special responsibility in this policy area. The Environment Committee deals with legislation relating to the above issues.
