Climate Change
The scientific community has moved toward a consensus that human activity is having an influence on the global climate. Governments must now take the actions necessary to deliver on their commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions and address other impacts on the climate. In early 2007 the 27 EU Member States set the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020. This is a step forward for David Cameron's commitment to a "3G Europe" - the three Gs being Globalisation, Global poverty and Global warming.
As a member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee, John Bowis is no stranger to the issues of climate change. Climate change is also a prominent issue for the Development Committee. Global warming is affecting and will affect the world's poorest countries harder, with potentially more devastating consequences.
The European Parliament has established a Temporary Committee on Climate Change (from June 2007). As a member, John Bowis will be contributing to the discussions as EU policymakers forge a comprehensive and effective response across all relevant policy areas (transport, agriculture, industry, housing, etc.).
