Uzbekistan

In May 2003, John Bowis visited Uzbekistan on a European Parliament Central Asia Delegation visit.

Uzbekistan is the most populous country in the region, gaining independence from the Soviet Union in September 1991.

The delegation discussed the operation of the partnership and cooperation agreemeent between Uzbekistan and the EU and the operation and efficiency of technical assistance and humanitarian aid from the EU. The delegation addressed developments in the political situation, including the poor human rights record as well as the problems of drug trafficking, corruption and organised crime.
