John Bowis moved a
resolution on Kyrgyzstan
at
the Plenary at Strasbourg in March 2002. Amongst other issues, it pointed
out that a number of leaders of opposition parties have been put in prison
on fabricated charges and the abuse of the judicial system to persecute
political opponents, and independent journalists. It called on the government
of Kyrgyzstan to guarantee respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms
throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international
human rights standards.
