JOHN BOWIS OBE MEP

John Bowis is married to Caroline and they have a daughter and two sons. He was born on 2nd August 1945 and educated at Tonbridge School and Brasenose College, Oxford (MA Philosophy, Politics and Economics).

Since 1999 he has been Conservative MEP for London and has been Rapporteur for the Parliament on Food Safety, Health and Enlargement, Professional Qualifications, Health and Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Patient Mobility, Major and Neglected Diseases in Developing Countries and Mental Health.

1997-1999
International Policy Adviser to the World Health Organisation's Collaborating Centre at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, supporting the UN's Nations for Mental Health Campaign. Visits to Ministers, health professionals and services and speaking at conferences in Australia, New Zealand, Hungary, Iran, USA, Bulgaria, Finland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Lebanon, Germany and Kyrghyzstan. Involved in launching and promoting WHO's campaign on epilepsy, Out of the Shadows. Adviser to SANE and its helpline, SANELINE.

1987-1997
Member of Parliament for Battersea
(Elected in June 1987 turning a Labour majority of 3,276 into a Conservative majority of 857. The Previous Conservative MP for North Battersea had been elected in 1931 and for South Battersea in 1959. In 1992 the majority increased to 4,480 with the biggest swing from Labour in England. In 1997 the seat went to Labour with one of the two lowest swings to Labour in London)

1989-93
Parliamentary Private Secretary to David Hunt at the Department of the Environment and the Welsh Office. Held office in parliamentary groups for the arts, education, inner cities and social sciences. Acted as observer for elections in Eritrea and Namibia and participated in parliamentary delegations to Sri Lanka, Russia, Ukraine and Lebanon, leading the last of these.

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health, responsible for social services, mental health, disability, children, the elderly and for drugs and alcohol. Visited Hungary, Germany, Netherlands, South Africa, Canada and the USA

British Minister on the Council of Health Ministers and at Council of Europe and other meetings.

1996-97
Minister for Transport in London and for Road Safety, including vehicle and driving standards, cycling, motor cycling, pedestrians and mobility issues.

He is a Fellow of Industry and Parliament Trust (with Esso) and was formerly President of Conservative Trade Unionists and British Youth Council, Chairman of National Council for Civil Protection and Board Member of Royal National Theatre, the South Bank, Royal Academy of Dancing and Battersea Arts Centre. He was also a member of the cast of the fundraising 'Blue Revue' for 12 years.

He is currently Board Member of the Institute of Psychiatry, International Institute on Special Needs Offenders and European Men's Health Forum. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
He is Patron of the Fund for Epilepsy and Vice Patron of APEX Trust, Wandsworth Symphony Orchestra and Friends of Battersea Church.

He is a Trustee of National Aids Trust, Epilepsy Research Foundation, Mosaic Clubhouse, CARA and SHARE Community.
He is President of TORCHE and Vice President of Parkinson's Disease Society and Battersea Army Cadet League.

From 1982-1986 he served as Councillor on the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, where he was Chairman of Education, Governor of Kingston Polytechnic, Kingston College and Tiffin Boys' Grammar School and was on the executive of Greater London Arts Executive and Vice Chairman Kingston Conservative Association.

Before 1987 he was Campaign Director for the British Insurance Brokers Association and, before that, for the National Federation of Small Businesses. He had previously worked for the Party as Director of Community Affairs, National Organiser for the Conservative Trade Unionists and the Federation of Conservative Students and was Election Agent in Harborough in 1970. When he left University he was Tutor at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park.
