News 17th June 2005 Women's health receives a boost One in ten girls and women suffer from endometriosis – a painful, chronic condition which can lead to infertility. The cause is not known and there is no cure. Conservative health spokesman in the European Parliament, London MEP John Bowis is co-author of a written declaration on endometriosis. It was supported by 266 MEPs – the highest for a health issue – and will lead to more research into the cause, prevention and treatment of the condition as well as funding for awareness campaigns in member states. Robert Music, of the British National Endometriosis Society said: “With many women struggling to obtain a correct and prompt diagnosis – it can take up to seven years – it is unacceptable that funding and awareness is so low.” John Bowis is calling on the British government to sponsor major information campaigns targeting the public, health professionals and legislators. |
