News 17th March 2005 New EU Driving Licence Only London's Conservative MEPs voted against the creation of a standard European driving licence. John Bowis MEP says: "The proposed licence includes unnecessary medical testing, mandatory regular renewals and increased regulations for motorcyclists". The Conservatives did, however, manage to exempt drivers with non-insulin dependent diabetes from regular checks, as well as a concession for moped drivers to avoid the more rigorous testing proposed for motorcyclists. "We have no objection to a standard EU driving licence but as usual the Commission has created a bureaucratic nightmare. Yet again Labour and Liberal Democrat MEPs are endorsing legislation that is overly burdensome on Londoners," says John Bowis, Conservative MEP for London. |
