Election victory for Conservatives in London

John Bowis has been re-elected as a Conservative Member of the European Parliament. The Conservatives improved their performance from 1999 and overtook Labour to come top of the poll.

John Bowis and fellow Conservative MEPs for London – Charles Tannock and Theresa Villiers – were re-elected to represent London.

John Bowis pledged to serve all his constituents and to stand up for Britian's interests in Europe.

The Conservatives took the largest share of the vote in the elections both in London and across the UK. They remain the largest UK Party in the European Parliament. The number of MEPs in London and across the UK is now as follows:

27 Conservative (3 from London)
19 Labour (3 from London)
12 Liberal Democrat (1 from London)
12 UKIP (1 from London)
2 Green (1 from London)
2 SNP
1 Plaid Cymru
1 UUP
1 DUP
1 SF

= 78 MEPs (a reduction from 87 members in the pre-Enlargement Parliament 1999-2004).

The Centre Right parties again fared best across the whole European Union, taking 279 of the 732 seats. The European People's Party/European Democrats Group (EPP-ED), of which the British Conservative MEPs and the Ulster Unionist Party MEP form a part, remains the largest and most influential grouping in the Parliament.
